From Denise's Treatment Room: The Questions Every Client Asks

After 15 years of working on skin in my spa in Westlake, I've learned something interesting: everyone thinks their questions are unique. But the truth is, about 90% of my clients ask the same handful of questions. And that's not a bad thing. It means these are the things that genuinely matter to real people trying to take care of their skin.

So I'm pulling back the curtain on my treatment room and answering the questions I hear most often. Consider this your cheat sheet!

Table of Contents

"Do I Really Need a Whole Routine?"

This is probably the number one question I get, and I love it because the answer is simpler than most people expect. You don't need 12 products. You need the right 3-5 products used consistently.

At minimum: a cleanser, a moisturizer, and sunscreen. That's your foundation. Everything else is built on top of that based on your specific skin concerns. If you have 60 seconds in the morning and 60 seconds at night, you can have a solid routine. No jade rollers required.

For clients who want to level up, I usually add a vitamin C serum in the morning (like VC Serum for antioxidant protection) and a retinol at night (Retinol Mafia is my go-to). But those are the next tier, not the starting line.

"Why Is My Skin Breaking Out When I'm Doing Everything Right?"

I hear this at least three times a week, and it's so frustrating for clients. You're cleansing, moisturizing, using your SPF, and your skin is still rebelling. Here are the most common culprits I find:

  • Your products are too heavy for the season. Austin goes from bone-dry winter to swampy summer fast. That rich cream that saved you in January is clogging your pores in May.
  • You're over-cleansing. Washing your face three times a day or using a cleanser that's too harsh strips your moisture barrier, which triggers more oil production, which causes more breakouts. It's a vicious cycle.
  • Dirty phone screens and pillowcases. I know it sounds basic, but your phone screen pressed against your cheek and a pillowcase you haven't changed in two weeks are breeding grounds for bacteria.
  • Stress and hormones. Living in a city as fast-paced as Austin, stress is a real factor. Cortisol triggers oil production. If you've been running hard, your skin knows.
Quick fix: Change your pillowcase every 2-3 days (or flip it halfway through). Clean your phone screen daily. You'd be surprised how much this helps.

"What's the One Product I Should Invest In?"

Everyone wants the magic bullet. If I absolutely had to pick one product, it's sunscreen. Every time. It prevents more aging than any serum or cream on the market. But if you're already wearing SPF consistently (and if you're my client, you better be), then the next best investment is a well-formulated retinol.

Retinol is the closest thing we have to a reset button for skin. It boosts cell turnover, stimulates collagen, smooths texture, and helps with breakouts and dark spots. It does more heavy lifting than any other single ingredient. Retinol Mafia delivers all of that without the irritation that makes most people give up on retinol too soon.

"How Often Should I Get a Facial?"

For most people, every 4-6 weeks is ideal. That aligns with your skin's natural turnover cycle. Think of it like getting your car serviced. Your daily routine is the equivalent of keeping gas in the tank and checking the oil. A professional facial is the full tune-up.

If you're dealing with a specific issue like acne, hyperpigmentation, or pre-event prep, you might come in more frequently for a series of treatments. And if budget is a factor, even every 8-12 weeks makes a noticeable difference compared to never.

"Is It Too Late to Fix Sun Damage?"

I get this question mostly from clients in their 40s and 50s who grew up slathered in baby oil at Hippie Hollow or spent every weekend at Lake Travis without a thought about SPF. And I always tell them the same thing: it's never too late to improve your skin. Will it look like it did at 20? No. Can it look dramatically better than it does right now? Absolutely yes.

Vitamin C serums (like VC Serum) help fade existing dark spots. Retinol speeds up cell turnover to reveal fresher skin underneath. Professional treatments like chemical peels and microneedling can make a significant dent in sun damage. And starting consistent SPF use today prevents any further damage from accumulating.

The best time to start was 20 years ago. The second best time is today.

"What Order Do I Apply My Products?"

This one confuses more people than it should, so here's the simple rule: thin to thick. Apply products in order from thinnest consistency to thickest.

Morning:

  1. Cleanser (Bright & Early to start fresh)
  2. Toner (if you use one)
  3. Vitamin C serum (VC Serum)
  4. Hydrating serum (Supernal Serum)
  5. Moisturizer (Extreme Sheer Moisturizer or Firm Believer)
  6. Sunscreen (Solar Shield Tinted SPF)

Night:

  1. Cleanser (double cleanse if you wore makeup/SPF)
  2. Treatment serum or retinol (Retinol Mafia)
  3. Hydrating serum
  4. Moisturizer or night cream

Wait about 30-60 seconds between each step to let products absorb. You don't need to time it perfectly, just don't slap everything on at once.

"Do I REALLY Need Sunscreen Every Single Day?"

Yes. Full stop. Even on cloudy days. Even in winter. Even if you're "just driving to work." UVA rays penetrate clouds and car windows. Here in Austin, our UV index hits extreme levels for months at a time. This is not optional.

I've been doing this for over 15 years, and the single biggest predictor of how well someone's skin ages is their sunscreen habits. Not their genetics. Not their serum collection. Their SPF consistency. Solar Shield Tinted SPF makes it easy because it feels good on the skin and gives you a light tint, so it doesn't feel like an extra chore.

From my treatment room to you: The questions you're afraid to ask are the questions everyone is asking. There's no such thing as a dumb skincare question. If you're curious about your skin, that means you care, and that's always the right starting point.

More Frequently Asked Questions

Should I pop my pimples at home?

Please don't. I know it's tempting, but at-home extraction usually pushes bacteria deeper, causes inflammation, and can lead to scarring. If you have a stubborn breakout, use a spot treatment with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide and let it run its course. Or come see me for a proper extraction.

Can I skip moisturizer if my skin is oily?

No. Oily skin still needs hydration. When you skip moisturizer, your skin produces even more oil to compensate for the lack of moisture. Use a lightweight, oil-free formula. Your skin will actually become less oily over time when it's properly hydrated.

How long should I give a new product before deciding if it works?

At least 6-8 weeks for most products, and up to 12 weeks for anti-aging ingredients like retinol or vitamin C. Your skin's turnover cycle means you need to go through at least one full cycle to see true results. The exception: if a product causes burning, rash, or severe irritation, stop immediately.

Do men need different skincare than women?

The basics are the same: cleanser, moisturizer, SPF. Men's skin tends to be thicker and oilier due to higher testosterone, so lighter-weight products often work well. But the fundamentals don't change based on gender. Everyone's skin needs protection and hydration.
